The Problem: Electrolyte Spills

Spill control systems are rapidly becoming standard equipment in all battery rooms. Spill Control is now a clear and legal necessity nation wide, whether your regulatory Agency is UFC (Uniform Fire Code), IFC (International Fire Code), or NFPA1UFC. The potential hazards associated with a battery electrolyte release come in two forms:

  1. When released, sulfuric acid can damage the building and its equipment as well as harm any personnel that come into contact with it. The acid can also damage the battery racks underneath them, thereby weakening the support structure.
  2. Electrolyte contained in older batteries can have measurable quantities of lead or lead sulfate which can result in hazardous contamination.

Does your site meet the requirements of your local Regulatory Agency?

All Agency Regulations require:

  • Each rack of batteries, or groups of racks, shall be provided with an acid resistant liquid-tight flooring, 4-inch spill control barrier which extends at least 1-inch beyond the battery rack in all directions.
  • An approved method to neutralize spilled electrolyte shall be provided. The method shall be capable of neutralizing a spill from the largest lead-acid battery to a pH between 7.0 and 9.0.
  • Doors leading to rooms with stationary lead acid battery systems must have approved signs.
  • Details in the requirements may differ between Regulatory Agencies from state to state.
